Street Legal

Two weekends back, we planted our vegetable seeds. We since realized the best place to put them is on the sill of the back porch - shielded from the rain, but with lots of direct sun.

The beets, cukes, and squashes are off to the races!

In other news, we got our car registered in RI last week. Yesterday it got inspected. Now we are street legal in Rhode Island. It's strange in a way, since it's very superficial, but taking off the DC plates and affixing the Ocean State ones made our move feel official. It sort of set in that we're now actually *of* this quirky little place. We aren't just visiting.

Volunteering yesterday, I worked with a young woman on regular hexagonal prisms - figuring out how to cut a piece of paper such that it could then be folded to make one.

Also, the Summit Neighborhood newsletter reported this week that our sewer systems are slated to be updated in 2011, and the streets in our neighborhood are to be repaved as that happens. If we're still around, that'll be a great thing, since our street specifically is pretty crummy on account of all the big military vehicles that come in and out of the armory.

No progress on painting this week, since it's been raining rats and frogs. That being said, as they painted last week, they worked a bunch on the gutters in the back. The improvements are working like a charm. It's not so glamorous, but that's the kind of fix that I groove on. Water was flowing off the shingles and then down behind the gutters, so they installed this flexible metal flashing...

...and now the water is going where it's supposed to go - into the gutters and downspouts, as opposed to running down the side of the house and ruining our wood and paint. Huzzah!

Yucky. You should grow Starburst jelly beans.

I unwrapped a strawberry one, buried it in the manure, watered it, but sadly, it didn't sprout.
