Manny

There was really only one thing that happened this week in Providence. The Manny Trade.

I got some of the tawdry scoop last night at the local pub, Ivy Tavern, our most favorite spot in town. Manny had been with the team eight years, came from Cleveland, started acting up recently in relation to his contract, would go make phone calls between innings, wasn't using the team locker room, threw the team's ticket manager (a 65-year-old guy) to the ground because he couldn't get sixteen tickets to a game that was occurring later that day, and on top of it, he wasn't being very productive.

People seem, in general, resigned about his departure, saying he had to go because he had been such a bad character, but disappointed, because he was with the team for a long time.

Personally, I don't care at all about Manny, but I am fascinated by the way folks in Providence watch baseball -- intently, but very quietly. A little muttering, shifting in the seat for a bad play, and a swig from the beer for a good play. Maybe it's just at Ivy that this goes on, but maybe not. I'll keep my eyes out for more data.

Another thing, unrelatedly, that's fascinating? No one here seems to read! I take the 99 bus on bad weather days. Everyone just sits. No magazine. No newspaper. No book. Just sits. I'm not quite sure what to make of it.

Happy weekend, everyone! Oh... and happy August!
