If we told all the stories of our days, of course, blog posts would get so long we'd have no time to sleep or work. Yesterday we could have shared a story, but we let it pass, planning to put it off for another post. Today, the story overtook our plans.
Eleven weeks ago, the day we arrived, we discovered a praying mantis egg in the screened porch. There were hundreds of praying mantises. They were like crawling long-grain rice, but thinner.
A month ago, we realized that one mantis remained within the screens, despite the missing panel. We've watched her expand over the course of the past few weeks. We kept expecting her to leave. All she did was eat moths.
As we closed the mantis in yesterday by fixing the screens, we named her Goliath. We were going to try to drop her in a jar and put her outside. We planned to document it all for y'all, but when I got home today from work, she was already out.
From inside, you can see how she got out. That's her, beneath the hole, experiencing her first moments of infinity.
See the small tear?

7AM Update: She's still waiting by the hole, and actually, she's closer to the hole than she was last night... looking like she may try to come back in. We keep telling her there'll be no more moths in the porch for her to eat, but she won't leave.
Ick. What is with you two and your horrible choice of pets? I think it's time for a puppy.
