The valves were leaking air at the bottom - moisture was bubbling to the surface through or around the pipe dope. I'm not sure if this will solve the problem, but upon reading the directions more closely, I discovered that pipe dope goes on both the male and female pieces in the case that the fitting is larger than 1 1/4 inches.
I took them apart; it was much easier than taking them apart the first time. Jonathan came over and helped put them back together, which involves jimmying those heavy radiators around.
