High-Tech Judo

The mudding is done. Last night I sanded everything down. Then I recoated the screw holes, and this morning, I put one last thin coat on all the inside corners. I have one more bout of sanding to manage tonight, and then I can prime the walls.

(Sanding joint compound is much much harder than it seems like it's going to be. You have to wear a mask, so your breathing is somewhat hampered. Everything you're wearing gets covered in a fine white dust, so less is better. The compound is a pretty resilient material, so you often have to use two hands to rotate the sander in circles in order to sand the surface evenly. I felt like I was doing some sort of high-tech judo or sumo wrestling or something - half-squating in front of the wall, vigorously rotating this big drywall sanding pad which is connected to a vacuum hose.)

This morning, it's looking like this down there...

...pretty good.

Tonight after sanding, I'll continue working on the floor. This is the stack of DryCore floor boards ready for installation on Saturday morning.

Since I don't own a table saw (which cuts long boards in reliably straight lines by way of a stationary guide and an adjustable blade), we built a contraption that allows the handheld SkilSaw to cut in reliably straight lines by way of a stationary guide and provides space to adjust the boards themselves. A poor man's table saw.

And here's how the floor is beginning to look.

Not bad right?

PS
Oof. I'm heading to the dentist now, and hopefully they can handle an unscheduled root canal. I downed a bunch of Advil last night, but wow, my tooth was aching. I think I slept five hours.

Rob- might I suggest using a valved dust make such as this one my dad invented http://www.amazon.com/3M-8511-Particulate-Sanding-Respirator/dp/B0002YKBV2/ref=pd_cp_hi_2 much more comfortable than the regular dust mask and, if you have glasses, it keeps them from fogging up!
Hope to see you Sat!

In fact, Sandra, I've been using that exact mask, and I'll be using it again in about twenty minutes when I'm mentally prepared for more sumo sanding. How cool that your dad invented it! It works very well, so he should be proud.
